The Carolina Panthers have the only owner in the NFL, Jerry Richardson, who also played in the NFL. So now imagine if the franchise was owned by a NASCAR bigwig.
With the Panthers secure in Charlotte, the 76-year-old Richardson has no plans to sell the team while he's alive, but that's not stopping an 85-year-old crosstown rival mogul to express intrigue in buying them.
According to Pro Football Talk's Darin Gantt, billionaire track owner Bruton Smith told Charlotte news radio station WBT-AM that he would be "interested" in the Panthers if the "price was right." Smith also said he hasn't approached Richardson, who has a contingency plan to have the team sold two years after his death.
The reason Richardson will be able to keep the Panthers in Charlotte longer term was a 15-year deal he struck with the city last week, which includes additional public funding from both the city and state. Smith, per PFT, said he "would commit to the city" without asking for such money.
Smith, the builder of Charlotte Motor Speedway, is known for being a flamboyant rabble-rouser around town. That doesn't quite fit the profile of current NFL owners, who are more reserved and don't have the true maverick among their brethren.
Consider, however, that Richardson doesn't come close to being the oldest owner in the league. That is where Smith would fit right in, as five NFL teams are principally owned by octogenarians (Cardinals, Chargers, Lions, Saints, Steelers) and three others by nonagenarians (Bills, Bears, Titans).
