The latest effort to decipher the unique aroma signature of the durian revered as the "king of fruits" in southeast Asia but reviled elsewhere as the world's foulest smelling food has uncovered several new substances that contribute to the fragrance. The research appears in ACS' Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Martin Steinhaus and colleagues explain that durian, available in Asian food shops in the United States and elsewhere, has a creamy yellowish flesh that can be eaten fresh or used in cakes, ice cream and other foods. Some people relish the durian's smell. Others, however, regard it as nauseating, like rotten onions. Past research identified almost 200 volatile substances in durian. Lacking, however, was information on which of those make a contribution to the characteristic durian smell. The authors set out to identify the big chemical players in the durian's odor signature.

In doing so, they pinpointed 41 highly odor-active compounds, 24 of which scientists had not identified in durian before. Among the most prominent were substances associated with fruity, sweet, sulfurous and oniony smells. The oniony smelling odorants belonged to a compound class that had rarely been found in food before. Four of the newly discovered chemical compounds were previously unknown to science.

Will Wysocky be Santa Rosa?s next mayor?

If Sonoma County?s election results can be certified by Monday, Tuesday could be the last City Council meeting for outgoing Santa Rosa City Council members John Sawyer and Marsha Vas Dupre and the first for newcomers Julie Combs and Erin Carlstrom. (If not, the changing of the guard will occur on Dec. 11.)

Whenever the new members are sworn in, the first order of business will be electing a new mayor, who will serve for two years, and a vice mayor who will serve for one.

The question is who will the mayor?be? At the moment, the money is on Gary Wysocky. He?s made no secret about the fact that he would like the post, and he may have the votes, given that Susan Gorin will still be on the council for that meeting. She won?t have to step down to assume her new role as county supervisor until the end of the year. Conventional wisdom suggests Wysocky would get the support of Gorin as well as newcomers Combs and Carlstrom.

But there are some who believe that it may end up going to City Councilman Scott Bartley who is likely to have the support of current Mayor Ernesto Oliveras and Councilman Jake Ours, who make up the more conservative bloc on the council.

The outcome is likely to hinge on the Carlstrom vote, which is uncertain. Wysocky did not endorse Carlstrom during the election and clearly was not happy with her decision to forge an alliance with Oliveras during the campaign. Carlstrom and Oliveras endorsed one another in September pledging to bridge the gap that has existed in recent years between the two factions on the City Council. But that alliance will certainly be tested early ? both during the vote for mayor and in the vote to appoint someone to fill Gorin?s seat.

Promises of better cooperation aside, it?s questionable?whether?the six City Council members will be able to agree on someone to fill the vacancy. The key will be whether Carlstrom votes with Wysocky and Combs or sides with Oliveras, Bartley and Ours.

Whatever the decision, the worst outcome would be if the City Council can?t come to an agreement and forces the city to hold a special election ? an election the city can ill?afford. Let?s hope it doesn?t come to that.

(AP) ? Syrian rebels on Monday captured a hydroelectric dam on the Euphrates River in the country's north after days of heavy fighting, seizing crates of ammunition from the government troops who were protecting the strategic facility in the latest battlefield success for opposition fighters, activists said.

Also Monday, activists said rebels and pro-government Kurdish gunmen struck a truce to end days of fighting in the northern town of Ras al-Ayn near the border with Turkey that opposition forces entered earlier this month.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said rebel fighters overran regime defenses and captured the Tishrin Dam, near the town of Manbij, before dawn on Monday. Observatory direction Rami Abdul-Rahman said the dam supplies several areas of Syria with electricity.

"This is a major blow to the regime," said Abdul-Rahman by telephone describing the dam as "strategic location" on the Euphrates, which flows from Turkey in the north through Syria and into Iraq.

The rebels have scored a series of hard-fought strategic advances recently. On Sunday, they captured a regime helicopter base outside Damascus before pulling back for fear of government airstrikes.

Syria's conflict started in March 2011 as an uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime, inspired by other Arab Spring revolts. It quickly morphed into a civil war that has since killed more than 40,000 people, according to activists.

Amateur videos posted online showed gunmen inside the dam's operations room as an employee sat in front of five screens speaking by telephone about the level of water behind the dam. Another video showed gunman in front of dozens of green wooden boxes apparently full of munitions.

A gunman opened one of the boxes showing that it contained hand grenades. "The Free Syrian Army has fully liberated the Tishrin Dam," one of the rebels could be heard saying.

The activist videos appeared genuine and corresponded to other AP reporting about the events depicted. Syria restricts the access of reporters.

Also Monday, Kurdish activist Mustafa Osso and the Observatory's Abdul-Rahman said the town of Ras al-Ayn has been quiet since Saturday after fighters from the government-leaning Kurdish Democratic Union Party, or PYD, reached an agreement on a truce with rebels, most of them from Islamist extremist groups, including the al-Qaida-inspired Jabhat al-Nusra.

The rebels entered the town earlier this month and have since clashed almost daily with PYD gunmen for control over the area. Both factions add to the complexity of Syria's conflict, which has taken on heavy sectarian ? and ethnic ? overtones.

The fighting in recent days has left dozens of people killed or wounded, and dozens captured on both sides. Osso and Abdul-Rahman said PYD forces and the rebels agreed to exchange prisoners and to withdraw their militiamen from the town.

Abdul-Rahman said the rival parties agreed to form a local council that will run day to day life in Ras al-Ayn. Osso said thousands of people who fled the town, which has a mixed population including Arabs, Kurds, Chechens and Christians, have started returning home.

A journalist in Ras al-Ayn told The Associated Press that the town has been calm since Saturday, adding that cars with PYD gunmen were seen in the streets with load speakers urging residents to return to their homes after the truce was reached. He added by telephone that parts of the town were heavily damaged by government air raids earlier this month.

When regime forces withdrew from Kurdish areas in northeastern Syria in July, they were quickly replaced by Kurdish fighters from PYD. Those forces then battled rebel fighters after they pushed their way into predominantly Kurdish areas. The Kurdish group is affiliated with the PKK, rebels fighting for autonomy in the Kurdish-dominated southeast region of Turkey.

The rebels, who Islamic militants, who are fighting on the side of the rebels, have played a bigger role in the Syrian conflict in recent months and many openly say they want to set up an Islamic state. The opposition is split, with some groups strongly opposed to the influence of extremists.

Korg announces iPolysix App for iPad, recreates classic analog polyphonic synthesizer

iPolysix App for iPad

MELVILLE, N.Y. /Music Industry Newswire/ ? Korg has unveiled the latest in its series of musical instrument apps. The new, intuitive iPolysix app evokes Korg?s legendary analog polyphonic synthesizer while taking full advantage of the iPad? interface. Up to eight instances of the synth can be used in conjunction with new features that include a sequencer, drum machine, multiple effects, Korg?s acclaimed Kaoss touch functionality for intuitive note and controller entry, and a complete automated mixer.

The original Polysix, a six-voice analog polyphonic synthesizer, launched in 1981. It quickly rose in popularity due to its combination of 6-note polyphony (a generous amount for the time) and a price that was nearly half of similarly-featured products. iPolysix uses Korg?s proprietary ?CMT? (Component Modeling Technology) to perfectly simulate the electronic circuits of the original instrument and its distinctively deep and rich pad sounds, pulsing basses, and crisp leads. Its layout offers beginners an easy way to start sound sculpting. It has also been expanded with music production functionality for enhanced musical possibilities.

Polyseq is iPolysix?s integrated polyphonic step sequencer that provides up to 64 steps for two dedicated synth instances and six poly-based drum instances ? all drawing on the Polysix engine and interface. Unique features include sequence mode functionality from Korg?s SQ-10 analog sequencer that allows users to play a sequence backward, or play back only the odd or even-numbered steps.

Users can call up either an onscreen keyboard for easy note entry, or two side by side Kaoss Pads that can be controlled simultaneously: one for note entry and one for control over the user?s choice of synth parameters. Musical phrases can be generated simply by rubbing a finger on the Kaoss Pad. This enables professional music production and creative performances, even for those who have no musical knowledge or have never played an instrument before. These Kaoss Pads have been customized for iPolysix to allow not only single-note performance, but also polyphonic playing.

Polystage is a platform on which iPolysix users can share their songs. iPolysix users can make their songs available to other users across the globe simply by uploading their song directly from the interface. iPolysix users can listen to and rate other user?s songs, or collaborate on a remix from rough ideas that have been uploaded.

Similarly, users can share their works via the popular SoundCloud feature from within the iPolysix app. SoundCloud provides a way to publish songs or to collaborate on new music with friends anywhere in the world via audio data export.

To celebrate the launch, the iPolysix app is available for download from Apple?s App Store at a special price of US $14.99 until December 31st, 2012. The regular price is US$29.99.

Also in celebration of the launch, Korg has announced a special half price offer on all Korg apps from November 26 through December 31, 2012.

Garage Wish List | 'Bout Home

The holiday season has begun, and thoughts will soon turn towards gift buying.? Instead of another sweater or robe for your significant other, opt instead to purchase items to make the garage a place of order and refuge.? It doesn?t matter if the recipient is male or female, as both sexes can appreciate gifts that either make life easier or more beautiful. From garage door openers to storage units, these gifts will be sure to please any homeowner.

An electric garage door opener is a necessity in cold climates.? Instead of getting out of a warm car on a dark night to open the garage door, these gadgets keep a person comfortable.? It?s 100% better to be able to automatically open and close a garage door than to have to do it manually; therefore, giving one as a gift will bring a huge smile to the face of the recipient.

Similarly, if a home has a dilapidated garage door, a new door would be a welcome gift.? Not only will a new door look better, it will help insulate the home more effectively.? Although a new garage door (and installation) may not be the perfect gift for everyone, I am sure a young couple who bought a fixer-upper would appreciate mom and dad paying for one.

The gift of safety speaks volumes.? Purchase a motion activated spotlight for above the garage door to thwart any would-be burglars.? These lights also work great for families who have children who need to use the garage keypad for entrance into the home at night.

Middle-priced items for the garage, such as storage units, also make wonderful gifts.? What homeowner doesn?t want to get a handle on all the the tall tools from rakes to shovels to garden hoes?? Or paint supplies?? Or garden supplies? There are storage units in all sizes and shapes to fit every need.

Also middle-priced are small refrigerators.? This gift item would be appreciated by a person who tends to spend a lot of time outside, and who would like the convenience of a cold drink without having to go all the way into the home.

Less expensive items for the garage could be used as stocking stuffers.? For instance, metal hooks for hanging bicycles from the ceiling will be appreciated, as will a new flashlight.? Another great idea ? a gift card to a home improvement store!

Of course there are many more gift ideas for the garage.? I know my husband?s favorite gift from me one year was the new riding lawn mower that is stored in the garage!? And he also liked the leaf blower and snow blower from previous years.

For homeowners, gifts that improve the look of the garage (new door), or the ease of use (garage door opener) can be most welcome.? Instead of buying another box of cologne or perfume, choose an item that will be used instead.

Russian PM Medvedev talks tough on hooligans

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:48 a.m. ET Nov. 26, 2012

MOSCOW (AP) -In a desperate attempt to curb football violence in Russia, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on Monday called for the most notorious hooligans to be banned for life from matches.

A Russian league game between Dynamo Moscow and Zenit St. Petersburg was called off last week after the Dynamo goalkeeper was injured after a firecracker was thrown from the Zenit stands. More than 90 people were briefly detained after the match but no one has been charged.

Dynamo was given a 3-0 win.

In the wake of disturbances at the Dynamo-Zenit game, the Russian government has drafted a bill to introduce harsh penalties for misbehaving fans, such as temporary suspensions. But on Monday, Medvedev urged the government to go further and introduce life bans.

Medvedev said punishment ought to be "extremely harsh against those who come to the stadium to misbehave rather than watch the match."

Russia is due to host a handful of international sports events in the coming years, including the 2014 Olympics in Sochi and the World Cup in 2018.

Medvedev said Monday that security for fans and athletes is a "priority" for Russia.

Violence at football matches as well as hooliganism off the field has been a problem in Russia for years but authorities have not been able to curb it.

HBT: Upton expected to sign with new team this week

Most highly-coveted free agents will wait until the Winter Meetings (held in early December) to begin seriously considering their options. But a few pieces of the offseason puzzle typically fall into place a little early. And this year will apparently be no different.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times writes in his Sunday column that outfielder B.J. Upton is ?looking to make a decision this week? on the multiple offers he?s been presented. The Phillies and Braves have both been?aggressive in their pursuits of Upton, and the Nationals, Rangers and Giants have also been loosely linked.

Upton hit just .246 with a .298 OBP in 633 plate appearances this past season for the Rays, but he slugged 28 home runs and stole 31 bases. And that kind of power and speed will always attract great interest.

The 28-year-old from Norfolk, Virginia seems likely to land a five-year deal worth close to $75 million.

James Marshall Crotty: McDermott's 29 Powers Creighton To Las Vegas Invitational Championship

2012-11-26-champs.jpg

On the wings of 10 of 19 shooting from player-of-the-year candidate Doug McDermott, the Creighton University Bluejays held off the Arizona State Sun Devils Saturday night to win the 12th Annual Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational. It was a coming out party for McDermott, the tourney MVP, who is rarely seen by West Coast coaches, fans, players, and pro scouts.

However, McDermott couldn't do it alone. Ethan Wragge's right corner trey with 2:22 to go -- after ASU pulled to within six (their closest margin of the night) -- was needed to finally darken the Sun Devils' upset hopes.

However, Creighton could have put the game away much earlier. Only eight minutes into the first half, the Bluejays raced to a 27-9 advantage. ASU was reeling. However, Jay turnovers off the ASU press, uncharacteristic Jay fouls and missed threes allowed ASU back into the contest. It was a dogfight the rest of the night.

ASU's speedy guard, Jahii Carson (which sounded at times like Nebraska's "Johnny Carson" over the Orleans Arena loudspeakers), lead all scorers with 30. Carson was only the fourth freshman in ASU history to score 30 in a game.

However, the balance and cohesion that has been the Bluejays' trademark over the past two seasons overcame Carson's singular effort. Seven Bluejays scored seven or more points. Moreover, ASU didn't have a consistent answer to Creighton's crisp ball movement, rebounding (the Bluejays had a 41-30 advantage) or second-chance points (Creighton won that category 14-0). Nor did the Sun Devils have a remedy for McDermott's deft post-ups, which literally and figuratively helped "seal" the victory for the tournament winners.

Of the roughly 3000 fans in attendance at the Orleans Arena, at least 80% looked like they were clad in blue. It didn't hurt that Creighton University alum Michael Gaughan gave out complimentary hotel rooms at his family-owned South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa to any Creighton fan attending the tournament. I wish I had known of the deal. My 5-star experience at the overrated Aria was hardly worth the hype (see my separate HuffPo review).

The Creighton-ASU game was a homecoming of sorts for yours truly. Not only am I graduate of Omaha Creighton Prep high school, but my late father Richard, sister Julie, and brother Rick are all graduates of Creighton University in one form or another. It was nice to see some friendly, if rowdy, faces from back home.

Next up for the Jays are Boise State (4-1) on Wednesday and the always-tough St. Joe's (3-1) on Saturday. And it won't get easier after that, as the Jays enter Missouri Valley Conference play.

However, beating the Big 12's Wisconsin (4-2) and the PAC-12's ASU (4-1) on successive nights on a neutral floor here in Vegas will prove valuable come NCAA tournament time. Though the 6-0 Jays are no longer below the radar, this smart, fast, and extremely well-coached mid-major remains a tough match-up for any opponent from any conference, regardless of setting.

It's all about the readers' happiness | TribLIVE

The business plan isn?t ideal.

Giving away a product that you also are selling tends to depress profits, but Chris Rodell isn?t at all depressed. He?s quite content, and he wants you to be as well.

Rodell has written a whimsical self-improvement book titled ?Use All the Crayons!? It?s an enlightening guide to being happy in tension-plagued times even if you?re wondering how you?ll make the next mortgage payment.

If you want a copy, Rodell will provide one for free.

He would prefer you pay the $15.95 cover price. He?s as fond of regular meals as the next person.

But if you can?t spare the coin and you?d still like to read his ideas for leading an enriching existence, just email him at storyteller@chrisrodell.com.

He?ll send you the book.

?This is something that I want people to have,? said Rodell, 49, of Latrobe. ?I know a lot of unhappy people going through tough times. Making $15.95 (on a book sale) is a poor excuse to keep someone marginally less cheerful.?

Rodell is a veteran freelance writer whose work has appeared in publications such as People, Playboy, Sports Illustrated and the National Enquirer. It wasn?t an easy way to earn a living in the best of times. When the Great Recession hit, writing gigs dried up faster than spit in the desert.

Rodell and his family were flat-out broke.

?We should have been miserable, we should have been angry,? he recalled. ?We weren?t.?

That?s when he got the idea for the book. He compiled a list of things he found inspiring or amusing, eventually interspersing 501 suggestions on how to lead a more colorful life with 33 essays illustrating how he provides pigmentation to his own.

Preachy, it?s not. A sampling of the advice offered:

? Mow the lawn in different patterns each week. Ask the neighbors to vote on their favorite.

? Never fail to include in your cards to newlyweds this sage advice for a long and happy marriage: Always argue naked.

? Get a $75 tattoo of an $18,000 Rolex for your wrist.

I?d reveal more, but then you won?t want to buy the free book.

?Crayons? was rejected by numerous publishers that Rodell said had more qualms about him than his work. ?A lot of them wondered how they could sell a self-help book by a guy who can?t even help himself,? he said.

Rodell published the book himself, but recently sold the audio rights to the Gildan Media Corp. He reports brisk sales at the Greensburg Barnes & Noble, where he?ll have a book signing on Dec. 1.

He also contends that giving the book away actually has been an effective sales technique.

?It hasn?t been unusual for a recipient to turn around and buy copies for other people,? he said. ?One guy I sent a copy to ended up buying 25 copies, one for each of his employees.?

The business model doesn?t guarantee Rodell a windfall, but that?s OK.

He might not ever get rich, but he?s already wealthy in other ways.

(AP) ? Tourists and locals flocked to Southfork Ranch on Saturday, bringing flowers in memory of Larry Hagman, who played the infamous J.R. Ewing on the TV show "Dallas."

Hagman died in Dallas on Friday at age 81 due to complications from his battle with cancer.

Southfork, a ranch north of Dallas, was known to millions of viewers as the Ewing family home. Exterior shots of the house and pool were shown when the series aired from 1978 to 1991, although the show wasn't filmed there.

The ranch has been open for tours since the mid-1980s, and now sees more than 100,000 visitors each year. Each room of the house has a theme for each character.

On Saturday, J.R. Ewing's room had flowers and a card for tourists to sign.

"Today is about Larry Hagman and his family," said Janna Timm, a Southfork Ranch & Hotel spokeswoman. "He was such a wonderful person, and we will really miss him."

"Dallas" was recently revived on TNT this summer, and all of the scenes were filmed at Southfork or other places in the Dallas area. Hagman had revised his role as the scheming oilman who would even double-cross his own son.

Linda Sproule of Peterborough, Ontario, had been traveling through the U.S. the past couple of weeks and heard about Hagman's death Friday while in Dallas. She said she didn't know where Southfork was but wanted to come because she was a fan of the show in the 1980s.

"I remember on Friday nights we watched it, and J.R. was bigger than life in some ways," she said after taking the Southfork tour Saturday morning. "This ranch is beautiful. Being here is kind of emotional in a way."

Barbara Quinones and her husband were in town for their daughter's soccer tournament and had already planned to visit Southfork when they heard news of Hagman's death.

"We loved him because he was so ruthless," said Quinones, of Albuquerque, N.M. "This is a sad day, but I'm glad we're here."

Some of the show's stars, including Hagman, came to Southfork for the series' 25th anniversary. The Fort Worth-born actor also had visited several times before the show was revived.

"He was definitely a gentleman, a class act," said Jim Gomes, vice president of resorts at Southfork Ranch & Hotel. "He loved the fans as much as they loved him."

'Dallas' star Larry Hagman dies in Texas

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Larry Hagman, whose predatory oil baron J.R. Ewing on television's long-running nighttime soap opera "Dallas" became a symbol for 1980s greed and coaxed forth a Texas-sized gusher of TV ratings, has died. He was 81.

Hagman, who returned as J.R. in a new edition of "Dallas" this year, passed away Friday afternoon due to complications from his battle with cancer, according to a statement from the family provided to The Associated Press by Warner Bros., producer of "Dallas."

"Larry was back in his beloved hometown of Dallas, re-enacting the iconic role he loved the most," the family said. "Larry's family and closest friends had joined him in Dallas for the Thanksgiving holiday."

Linda Gray, his on-screen wife in the original series and the sequel, was with Hagman when he died in a Dallas hospital, said her publicist, Jeffrey Lane.

"He brought joy to everyone he knew. He was creative, generous, funny, loving and talented, and I will miss him enormously. He was an original and lived life to the fullest," Gray said in a statement.

Hagman was diagnosed in 1992 with cirrhosis of the liver and acknowledged that he had drank heavily for years. In 1995, a malignant tumor was discovered on his liver and he underwent a transplant.

Years before "Dallas," Hagman had gained TV fame as a nice guy with the fluffy 1965-70 NBC comedy "I Dream of Jeannie," in which he played Capt. Tony Nelson, an astronaut whose life is disrupted when he finds a comely genie, portrayed by Barbara Eden, and takes her home to live with him.

He also starred in two short-lived sitcoms, "The Good Life" (NBC, 1971-72) and "Here We Go Again" (ABC, 1973). His film work included well-regarded performances in "The Group," ''Harry and Tonto" and "Primary Colors."

But it was Hagman's masterful portrayal of the charmingly loathsome J.R. that brought him his greatest stardom. The CBS serial drama about the Ewing clan and those in their orbit aired from April 1978 to May 1991.

The "Who shot J.R.?" story twist, in which Hagman's character was nearly murdered in a cliffhanger episode, fueled international speculation and millions of dollars in betting-parlour wagers. It also helped give the series a ratings record for the time.

When the answer was revealed in a November 1980 episode, an average 41 million viewers tuned in to make "Dallas" the second most-watched entertainment show of all time, trailing only the "MASH" finale in 1983 with 50 million viewers.

It was J.R.'s sister-in-law, Kristin (Mary Crosby) who plugged him ? he had made her pregnant, then threatened to frame her as a prostitute unless she left town ? but others had equal motivation.

Hagman played Ewing as a bottomless well of corruption with a charming grin: a business cheat and a faithless husband who tried to get his alcoholic wife, Sue Ellen (Linda Gray), institutionalized.

"I know what I want on J.R.'s tombstone," Hagman said in 1988. "It should say: 'Here lies upright citizen J.R. Ewing. This is the only deal he ever lost.'"

On Friday night, Victoria Principal, who co-starred in the original series, recalled Hagman as "bigger than life, on-screen and off. He is unforgettable, and irreplaceable, to millions of fans around the world, and in the hearts of each of us, who was lucky enough to know and love him."

Ten episodes of the new edition of "Dallas" aired this past summer and proved a hit for TNT. Filming had been completed for five of the episodes for the second season and work on the sixth episode was in progress, the network said.

There was no immediate comment from Warner or TNT on how the series would deal with Hagman's loss.

In 2006, Hagman did a guest shot on FX's drama series "Nip/Tuck," playing a macho business mogul. He also got new exposure in recent years with the DVD releases of "I Dream of Jeannie" and "Dallas."

The Fort Worth, Texas, native was the son of singer-actress Mary Martin, who starred in such classics as "South Pacific" and "Peter Pan." Martin was still in her teens when he was born in 1931 during her marriage to attorney Ben Hagman.

As a youngster, Hagman gained a reputation for mischief-making as he was bumped from one private school to another. He made a stab at New York theater in the early 1950s, then served in the Air Force from 1952-56 in England.

While there, he met and married young Swedish designer Maj Axelsson. The couple had two children, Preston and Heidi, and were longtime residents of the Malibu beach colony that is home to many celebrities.

Hagman returned to acting and found work in the theater and in such TV series as "The U.S. Steel Hour," ''The Defenders" and "Sea Hunt." His first continuing role was as lawyer Ed Gibson on the daytime serial "The Edge of Night" (1961-63).

He called his 2001 memoir "Hello Darlin': Tall (and Absolutely True) Tales about My Life."

"I didn't put anything in that I thought was going to hurt someone or compromise them in any way," he told The Associated Press at the time.

After his transplant, he became an advocate for organ donation and volunteered at a hospital to help frightened patients.

"I counsel, encourage, meet them when they come in for their operations, and after," he said in 1996. "I try to offer some solace, like 'Don't be afraid, it will be a little uncomfortable for a brief time, but you'll be OK.' "

He also was an anti-smoking activist who took part in "Great American Smoke-Out" campaigns.

Library of Congress shows diaries from Civil War

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Letters and diaries from those who lived through the Civil War offer a new glimpse at the arguments that split the nation 150 years ago and some of the festering debates that survive today.

The Library of Congress, which holds the largest collection of Civil War documents, pulled 200 items from its holdings to reveal both private and public thoughts from dozens of famous and ordinary citizens who lived in the North and the South. Many are being shown for the first time.

Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, for one, was grappling with divided federal and state allegiances. He believed his greater allegiance was to his native Virginia, as he wrote to a friend about resigning his U.S. Army commission.

"Sympathizing with you in the troubles that are pressing so heavily upon our beloved country & entirely agreeing with you in your notions of allegiance, I have been unable to make up my mind to raise my hand against my native state, my relatives, my children & my home," he wrote in 1861. "I have therefore resigned my commission in the Army."

Lee's handwritten letter is among dozens of writings from individuals who experienced the war. They are featured in the new exhibit "The Civil War in America" at the library in Washington until June 2013. Their voices also are being heard again in a new blog created for the exhibition.

For a limited time in 2013, the extensive display will feature the original draft of President Abraham Lincoln's preliminary Emancipation Proclamation and rarely shown copies of the Gettysburg Address.

Beyond the generals and famous battles, though, curators set out to tell a broader story about what Lincoln called "a people's contest."

"This is a war that trickled down into almost every home," said Civil War manuscript specialist Michelle Krowl. "Even people who may seem very far removed from the war are going to be impacted on some level. So it's a very human story."

Curators laid out a chronological journey from before the first shots were fired to the deep scars soldiers brought home in the end.

While some still debate the root causes of the war, for Benjamin Tucker Tanner in 1860, the cause was clear, as he wrote from South Carolina in his diary.

"The country seems to be bordering on a civil war all on account of slavery," wrote the future minister. "I pray God to rule and overrule all to his own glory and the good of man."

A personal letter from Mary Todd Lincoln in 1862 was recently acquired by the library and is being publicly displayed for the first time.

In the handwritten note on stationery with a black border, Mary Lincoln reveals her deep grief over the death of her son Willie months earlier. Krowl said Mary Lincoln's grief is also evident in the new movie, "Lincoln."

"When you read this letter ... you just get a palpable feeling of how in the depth that she's been and she's now finally coming out of her grief, at least to resume public affairs," Krowl said.

All the documents in the exhibit are original. They include a massive map Gen. Stonewall Jackson commissioned of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley to prepare for a major campaign.

The library also is displaying personal items from Lincoln, including the contents of his pockets on the night he was assassinated, and the pocket diary of Clara Barton who would constantly record details about soldiers she met and later founded the American Red Cross.

Some of the closing words come from soldiers who lost their right arms or hands in battle and had to learn to write left-handed. They joined a left-handed penmanship contest and shared their stories.

"I think this exhibition will have a lot of resonance for people," said exhibit director Cheryl Regan. "Certainly soldiers returning home from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are going to be incredibly moved by these stories."

Computer-navigated total knee replacement provides no advantage over traditional surgical procedure, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Nov. 21, 2012) ? - For many years, the use of computer-assisted navigation has been touted as improving the positioning, sizing and alignment of replacement knee joints, resulting in greater durability of joints and overall improvement in patient movement. However, new research published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS) found no difference in knee function, alignment or durability/survivorship between joints positioned and completed with the help of computer navigation, and those replaced with conventional total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedures.

Researchers in Korea compared the results of 520 patients with osteoarthritis who underwent computer-navigated TKA for one knee and conventional TKA for the other knee. Patients included 452 women (904 knees) and 68 men (136 knees). Patients were assessed before surgery, and then at three months and one year following surgery, and annually thereafter, for 10 to 12 years (mean assessment duration: 10.8 years). Patients were assessed clinically using the Knee Society rating system and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and. radiographically using X-rays or CT scans.

No statistically significant differences were noted between the computer-navigated and traditional procedure scores pertaining to knee function, pain, knee motion and activity, according to the study. In addition, the Knee Society and WOMAC scores were comparable for both procedures.

"Our mid-term follow-up data demonstrated no difference in clinical function or alignment and survivorship of the components between the knees that underwent computer-navigated total knee arthroplasty and those that underwent conventional total knee arthroplasty," said Young-Hoo Kim, MD, The Joint Replacement Center, Ewha Womans University School of Medicine in Seoul, Korea.

Authorities: Jailed Man Ran Internet Porn Business Behind Bars ...

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say a jailed adult entertainment consultant convicted of tax evasion was able to manage his business for more than 18 months in Detroit using a laptop computer in his cell and jail telephones.

Francis Sharrak, 44,?of Farmington Hills, was locked up in a cell for high-profile inmates in Wayne County,?awaiting sentencing on federal tax evasion charges in August 2010. Health problems and numerous requests for delays kept him there until May 2012.

Sharrak was serving as his own lawyer and asked for the laptop to prepare arguments for his federal court sentencing. But, he wasn?t supposed to have the computer.

According to court records, Sharrak said he ?had illegitimate access in his jail cell to a privately owned personal computer equipped with Internet access, a camera, photo, video, text and e-mail capabilities, and the ability to communicate by voice and video over the Internet through software programs such as Skype.?

Sharrak?allegedly used the computer to operate and promote adult websites. Authorities say he also used a jail telephone?to discuss management decisions at strip clubs where?he was a consultant?? including Platinum Show Girls in Toledo and Spanky?s Club in Dayton, Ohio ??and how to move money around.

Undersheriff?Daniel Pfannes?acknowledged that Sharrak had the computer, calling it an isolated case.

?We were misled initially by an employee who said there was a court order giving him access to a laptop computer,? Pfannes told The Detroit News.

Pfannes said that employee has since been fired and?the department has changed policies to avoid a repeat in the future, although he declined to detail the policy changes or name the employee.

On March 8, the sheriff?s department seized Sharrak?s?computer. Sharrak filed a motion to get it back, saying he?d had it since August 2010 and that it was essential to his defense. A federal judge denied the request.

Sharrak?wasn?t charged for any of his jailhouse activities, but prosecutors did ask a judge to consider them at sentencing. Federal prosecutors said Sharrak deserved a high-end sentence because he failed to learn his lesson and repeatedly broke the rules while locked up.

?Through his past conduct as proven at trial, and his apparently continuing conduct of the same nature, even while confined, defendant has shown that he simply refuses to abide by laws, rules, restrictions and directives imposed upon him,? Assistant U.S. Attorney Carl Gilmer-Hill wrote in a sentencing memorandum.

On April 30, 2012, Sharrak was sentenced?to six years in prison and ordered to pay $4.2 million in restitution. He is currently serving his sentence at a federal prison in West Virginia.
