Women's immune systems remain younger for longer

May 15, 2013 ? Women's immune systems age more slowly than men's, suggests research in BioMed Central's open access journal Immunity & Ageing. The slower decline in a woman's immune system may contribute to women living longer than men.

Researchers looked at the blood of healthy volunteers in Japan, ranging in age between 20 and 90 years old; in both sexes the total number of white blood cells per person decreased with age. The number of neutrophils decreased for both sexes and lymphocytes decreased in men and increased in women. Younger men generally have higher levels of lymphocytes than similarly aged women, so as aging happens, the number of lymphocytes becomes comparable.

Looking in more detail it became apparent that the rate in decline in T cells and B cells was slower for women than men. Both CD4+ T cells and NK cells increased with age, and the rate of increase was higher in women than men. Similarly an age-related decline in IL-6 and IL-10 was worse in men. There was also a age-dependent decrease in red blood cells for men but not women.

This difference in the aging of immune systems between men and women is one of many processes which alter as we grow older. Prof Katsuiku Hirokawa from the Tokyo Medical & Dental University Open Laboratory explained, "The process of aging is different for men and women for many reasons. Women have more oestrogen than men which seems to protect them from cardiovascular disease until menopause. Sex hormones also affect the immune system, especially certain types of lymphocytes. Because people age at different rates a person's immunological parameters could be used to provide an indication of their true biological age."

Turkey's Erdogan to push Obama on Syria after bombings

By Nick Tattersall

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Turkey's prime minister will push President Barack Obama for more assertive action on Syria during a visit to Washington this week, days after car bombs tore through a Turkish border town in the deadliest spillover of violence yet.

The bombings in Reyhanli, which killed 50 people on Saturday, and activists' reports of a massacre of Sunni Muslims in a Syrian coastal town have incensed Tayyip Erdogan, already critical of the slow international response to the conflict.

The risk of Syria's chaos spreading will top the agenda in Erdogan's talks with Obama on Thursday, but the wide-ranging meeting with one of Washington's Middle Eastern allies is also expected to cover Turkey's nascent reconciliation with Israel and its deepening energy ties with Iraqi Kurdistan.

Turkey has thrown its weight heavily behind the two-year uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, allowing the rebels to organize on its soil and sheltering 400,000 refugees.

But Ankara resents a sense that Western allies are cheering it along while offering little in the way of concrete support.

"Of course Syria will be our main topic ... We will draw a roadmap. Turkey has been damaged more than any other country," Erdogan told reporters before boarding his plane to Washington.

Saturday's bombings in crowded shopping streets, which Ankara blamed on "an old Marxist terrorist organization" with direct links to Assad's government, brought home the reality of Syria's chaos spreading to Turkish soil.

Washington sees Turkey, which shares a 900 km border with Syria and has NATO's second-largest army, as key to planning for a post-Assad Syria and is expected to push for Erdogan's support in arranging a proposed peace conference also backed by Moscow.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said he expected the conference to be held in early June, although Western leaders including Obama have dampened expectations that a civil war, estimated by the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights to have killed over 94,000 people, can be doused soon.

Assad's government has said it wants specifics before it decides whether to take part, while Syria's main opposition coalition has said it will meet in Istanbul on May 23 to assess whether it will join.

"Our objective is to ensure Assad cedes power to a transitional authority. We are hoping that what (Russian Foreign Minister Sergei) Lavrov and Kerry announced will be within those parameters," a senior Turkish government official said.

Turkey long advocated a no-fly zone to create safe havens within Syria but the idea failed to gain much traction among Western allies. It has since said it favors greater support to the opposition over military intervention, though some Turkish officials said a no-fly zone could come back under discussion.

Erdogan and Obama are also expected to confer on any evidence of chemical weapons use by Assad's forces, which the U.S. president has warned would be a "red line", as well as possible deeper U.S. engagement in the conflict.

Turkey has been testing blood samples from casualties, which Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, who will also be in Washington, said last week indicated chemical weapons use.

Washington has said in recent weeks it is rethinking its long-standing opposition to arming the rebels, although there has been no word on when a decision might be made.

ENERGY DEALS

Turkey and the United States have a long history of military and strategic cooperation but ties have often been prickly.

Erdogan and Obama will discuss a host of other regional issues, from Turkey's thawing relations with Israel to its energy deals with Iraq, as well as the division of Cyprus, split between a Turkish north and Greek Cypriot south since 1974.

"The visit is an opportunity for the leaders to coordinate on a broad and substantive agenda, including Syria, Iraq, Middle East peace, Iran and countering global terrorism, among others," a White House official said.

Turkey is not the deferential U.S. ally it once was, its long-standing alignment with Washington has eroded under the decade-old leadership of Erdogan, who has carved out an increasingly assertive and independent role on the world stage.

Its caustic rhetoric on Israel, gold sales to Iran - meant to be under the choke of U.S. sanctions - and deepening energy ties with Iraqi Kurdistan, to the chagrin of the central government in Baghdad, have all been sticking points.

Before leaving for Washington, Erdogan - who will be accompanied by Energy Minister Taner Yildiz - said Turkey had agreed with Kurdistan's regional government and U.S. oil giant ExxonMobil on terms for oil exploration.

Kurdistan is pushing ahead with plans to build its own oil export pipeline to Turkey, despite objections from the United States, which fears it could lead to the break-up of Iraq.

An energy official in Ankara said Turkey could open a neutral escrow account to help share the revenues.

"If the U.S. administration gives the green light, Turkey could take a step forward in this," the official said.

Montlick & Associates - Why Do Personal Injury Attorneys Keep ...

Many drivers and passengers that are the victims of drunken drivers presume that they have a "slam dunk" legal claim. These same victims are appalled when they are turned away from personal injury law firms that indicate they cannot take the case. When someone suffers significant injuries during a collision with an intoxicated driver, it can be extremely difficult to understand why a law firm would be hesitant to take such a case. While the negligence of the other driver may be clear and the victim's injuries significant, the problem might lie not in obtaining a judgment but in enforcing the judgment.

Drivers involved in accidents while under the influence of alcohol or drugs usually are not committing DUI/DWI for the first time. Many alcohol or drug-impaired drivers have prior DUI convictions on their record. DUI convictions? are often accompanied by a driver's license suspension. Further, some studies have shown that over half of all drivers that have their driver's licenses suspended or revoked for DUI continue to drive even without a license. During the period a driver does not have a driver's license, the driver will also be unable to obtain insurance. Even after a driver has his or her driver's license reinstated, the cost of insurance often will be sky high, which may discourage repeat DUI offenders from obtaining insurance coverage, even though required by law.

When you consider the likelihood that a driver with prior DUI offenses does not have insurance, it may become more apparent why many victims of DUI crashes struggle to find legal representation following their collision with an intoxicated driver. However, our experienced Atlanta DUI accident attorneys at Montlick and Associates believe that victims of intoxicated drivers deserve financial compensation for their injuries and loss. We explore all viable options for making a claim against a defendant who has the ability to pay a damage claim.

One potential alternative, depending on the state in which you live, might be to file a claim against the party that served the alcohol. Many states, including Georgia, have dram shop laws that impose liability on bars, restaurants and similar businesses that continue to serve alcohol to those who are obviously intoxicated or who are drinking underage. Some states even impose liability on social hosts that serve or knowingly allow alcohol to be consumed by underage drinkers. If you or someone close to you is the victim of an alcohol-impaired driver, you should ask a personal injury attorney about the availability of a claim for social host or dram shop liability.

Additionally, if you have uninsured motorist coverage (which we strongly urge everyone to purchase as part of their policy), your insurance company will step in and pay under that portion of the policy if the other driver is uninsured or underinsured (does not have enough insurance), as if they are insuring the driver who caused the accident.?

Other options that we may explore, depending on the facts and circumstances, include a potential product liability lawsuit against the vehicle manufacturer, a dangerous road claim against a public entity, and a negligence claim against another driver or other party. The bottom line is that we are committed to aggressively pursuing liability claims in DUI accident injury cases, especially when the accident could have been prevented by refusing to provide alcohol to someone who was underage or already too drunk to drive safely.

Justin Bieber pops up on 'The Simpsons'

TV

Justin Bieber has added another first to add to his long list of career milestones: He can now be added to the gallery of stars who have made cameo appearances on the long-running FOX series "The Simpsons."

On Sunday night, Bieber -- who in past months has experienced a series of embarrassing headlines related to overenthusiastic fans, uncooperative bouncers and other monkeyshines -- at last did something non-controversial when he showed up as himself on the episode "The Fabulous Faker Boy."

In the episode, Bieber, complete with long, wavy bangs, tries to get into a children's talent show, and is turned away by yet another bouncer who doesn't get him. "That's another 25 bucks we'll never see. God!" cartoon Bieber says in exasperation, then walks off.

Directly afterward, an on-screen note alerted viewers of an "all clear," saying "'The Simpsons' will be Bieber-free from this point on."

The pop singer seemed to be happy with the whole experience, and tweeted a shot of his character on Thursday while referring to Dan Kanter, his guitarist and musical director, in his comment: "Wait. Is that @dankanter creepin in the back? Haha."

"Simpsons" producer Al Jean told Rolling Stone, "It's just a cameo. This sentence is longer than his appearance."

He added that Bieber can thank "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening for his appearance. "I think he has a family member who was a fan," said Jean. "I think he's a fan, too. So he asked us to find a place to use him. I think (Bieber) had also met Matt and wanted to be on the show."

Of course, Bieber wasn't the only guest star on Sunday's episode; also making voice appearances were Bill Hader of "Saturday Night Live," Jane Krakowski of "30 Rock: and Patrick Stewart of "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

Robson beats Venus, faces Serena next in Rome

ROME (AP) ? Venus Williams lost in the first round of the Italian Open to Laura Robson. Now sister Serena will get a chance to even the score.

Robson, a quickly improving 19-year-old British player, beat Venus Williams 6-3, 6-2 on Monday to set up a second-round match with top-ranked Serena.

The 19-year-old Robson won the Wimbledon junior title at 14. At last week's Madrid Open, she upset fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska before losing in the third round to 16th-seeded Ana Ivanovic in a third-set tiebreaker.

"I just like it on big courts against these huge players because I just go out there with nothing to lose," the 39th-ranked Robson said. "I can remember seeing (Venus) play at Wimbledon when I was about 10 and I was kind of blown away with the speed that she hit the ball.

"Today when she hit it in the center of the racket it was basically point over, so I just had to take my chances."

Both players struggled with the wind at the Foro Italico, with Robson hitting eight double-faults and Williams six. However, Williams' errors came at more inopportune times, with two double-faults in the final game.

"It's always hard to play high quality tennis in that wind," Robson said. "I wish it could have been a higher standard but I'm happy to have won."

Serena, who won the Madrid title Sunday, watched the match from the stands.

"She's really young, still," said Serena Williams, whose only title at this clay-court tournament came in 2002. "She's just so free and she looks great on the court and she's so smooth and she's a lefty, so that just adds a notch to her whole level. I've never played her before. I've always wanted to. So I have a tough second-round match."

Serena's only title at this clay-court tournament came in 2002 but if she continues playing the way she did in Madrid ? and in her previous two tournaments, which she also won ? she'll be difficult to beat.

"She is playing probably her best tennis," Robson said. "So it's going to be insanely tough but I'm just going to go out there and do my best."

This tournament is the last major warm-up for the French Open, the year's second Grand Slam, which starts May 26.

The top 32 players get seeded for Grand Slams.

"I've said since the start of the year that I wanted to be seeded for Wimbledon and it would be great if I were to be seeded for Roland Garros as well," Robson said.

The top-eight seeded players in Rome have first-round byes.

In other matches, ninth-seeded Samantha Stosur cruised past Su-Wei Hsieh of Taiwan 6-2, 6-3; two-time champion Jelena Jankovic overpowered Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria 6-3, 6-0; Sabine Lisicki of Germany eliminated American qualifier Mallory Burdette 6-1, 6-2; and Italian wild-card entry Nastassja Burnett defeated 2008 finalist Alize Cornet of France 6-2, 6-2.

In men's action, 11th-seeded Marin Cilic beat Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan 6-4, 6-2 and Italian wild card Potito Starace rallied past Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to set up a match against second-seeded Roger Federer.

Meanwhile, 10th-seeded Janko Tipsarevic withdrew from the tournament with bronchitis and Lukas Rosol took his place in the draw.

Also, sixth-seeded Angelique Kerber withdrew with an abdominal injury and was replaced by Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain.

Lenovo IdeaPad N581

The Lenovo IdeaPad N581, for sale in Canada, is a 15-inch desktop replacement with a price that's hard to beat, making it a top pick for value-priced laptops. With a design that looks understated rather than cheap, and performance to get work done or browse the Web, it's a smart buy for anyone shopping on a budget. For under $500, the Lenovo IdeaPad N581 offers solid performance, ample storage, and a healthy feature set, making it an Editors' Choice for value-priced systems.

Design
The chassis is black plastic with a satiny soft-touch finish that adds a luxurious note to an otherwise drab design. The finish feels good under the fingertips, but doesn't do much to prevent fingerprints and smudges, so you might want to wipe it down regularly to keep it looking clean.

Measuring 1.3 by 14.8 by 9.6 inches (HWD), the Lenovo is noticeably thicker and heavier than the Samsung Series 3 NP300E5E-A05CA (0.98 inch thick, 4.85 pounds), and heavier to boot, weighing in at 5.71 pounds. The 15.6-inch display offers the expected 1366 by 768 resolution, and when tested with the latest trailer for The Man of Steel, details were as sharp as expected in 720p, with clear, consistent colors. There is some color shifting when viewed from an angle, but it's not so bad as to prevent two or three people from looking at the same screen.

The accompanying audio, on the other hand produces decent sound from the two 3-watt speakers?enhanced with Dolby Home Theater V2 software?but almost no bass. For a fuller, richer sound, you'll need an external set of speakers.

The budget laptop benefits from Lenovo's superb AccuType keyboard, which offers chiclet keys and a compact numeric pad that feel solid, and much more substantial than the lightweight keys found on competitors, such as the Samsung Series 3. The touchpad lets you swipe and flick with support for all the usual Windows 8 gestures?two-fingered scrolling, right-swipe access to the Charms Bar, left-swipe to cycle through open apps?and has two separate mouse buttons. What it doesn't offer, however, is a touch screen. While that's not something we'd expect in a laptop at this price, touch is ideal for Windows 8. If you're looking for a laptop with a touch screen, be prepared to spend a bit more.

Features
For a budget laptop, the Lenovo IdeaPad N581 is fairly well-equipped, sporting both USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports (two each), HDMI and VGA output for connecting to a monitor, HDTV, or projector, and an integrated card slot (SD, MMC). Between the built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet, your networking needs should all be taken care of. A tray-loading optical drive covers all of your DVD reading and writing tasks.

The IdeaPad N581 is equipped with a 750GB 5,400 rpm hard drive, which may not match the larger, faster hybrid drives found in premium systems, but offers plenty of storage space and is quite generous for a system in this price range. Microsoft's latest operating system, Windows 8, is preinstalled on the drive, along with a few extras, like Skype, Evernote, and Amazon Kindle Reader. Microsoft Office Starter 2010 gives you limited versions of Word and PowerPoint for free, but for full functionality and Excel or other tools, you'll need to purchase an Office activation code. Lenovo includes several other utilities for system recovery, online storage backup, and energy management, in addition to a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

Performance
Lenovo IdeaPad N581 The Lenovo IdeaPad N581 is outfitted with an Intel Core i3-3210M processor, at the low end of Intel's current 3rd Gen (a.k.a. Ivy Bridge) processors. Paired with 8GB of memory, the Core i3 offers performance well suited to moderate computing tasks, such as heavy web-browsing and office tasks. In Cinebench, the Lenovo N581 scored 2.49 points, falling behind the Core i5-equipped Samsung Series 3 NP300E5E-A05CA (3.0 points) but edging past the HP Pavilion M6-118-CA (2.04 points) and the Acer Aspire V5-571P-6627 (1.77 points).

Lenovo IdeaPad N581

Like most budget systems, the IdeaPad N581 relies on Intel's integrated graphics processing, and produced 3DMark 11 scores of 1,234 points (Entry Settings) and 224 points (Extreme Settings). By comparison, the Samsung NP300E5E-A05CA scored a similar 1,243 points (Entry) with integrated graphics and faster Intel Core i5 processor. This will be more than sufficient for most office tasks and web browsing, but gaming is largely out of the question without a discrete GPU?in our gaming tests, neither test provided playable scores at any resolution and detail settings. That said, the IdeaPad N581 should be ok with casual games like Cut the Rope and browser-based 3D titles.

In our battery rundown test, the Lenovo's 6-cell battery lasted 4 hours 43 minutes, ahead of the Acer Aspire V5-571P-6627 (3:37 with a smaller 4-cell battery), but less than the Samsung Series 3 NP300E5E-A05CA (5:11 with a similar 6-cell battery). While that's not long enough to get through a full day of work or school, it is enough that you can get by with a mid-day charge, though you will need to haul around the extra weight of the AC adapter.

Conclusion
As value-priced systems go, the Lenovo IdeaPad N581 is a solid laptop, providing the sort of performance perfect for use by students or around the home. With ample storage and a relatively robust selection of features, it's our Editors' Choice for value priced laptops. While you can find systems with better performance and portability, like the Samsung Series 3, it also cost more, and bargain hunters will definitely find the Lenovo IdeaPad N581 to be a great blend of performance and price.

TV's greatest ? and not-so-good ? moms

May 11, 2013 at 10:39 AM ET

Ah, Mother's Day. Have your flowers? A card? Dinner reservations? Well, if you'd been brought up by some of TV's best mother figures, you'd be all prepared for Sunday.

On the other hand, there are some TV mamas out there who never got the memo on raising kids right. According to a recent Harris Poll, June Cleaver (of "Leave it to Beaver") may remain the iconic image of television motherhood -- she's topped their list for the second year in a row, followed by "The Cosby Show's" Clair Huxtable and "The Brady Bunch's" Carol Brady -- but we came up with our own list of favorites. Plus a few whose methods leave much to be desired.

Enjoy, and call your mother!

The Best

Clair Huxtable, 'The Cosby Show'

She hasn't been on TV for 20 years, but her shoulder-padded, 1980s-jumpsuit-rocking self remains the mom who tops all moms, the queen who will never be dethroned. She was beautiful, yes, and had an angel?s voice (just watch her sing solo in the ?Hillman? episode). She was smart -- though we didn?t see as much of Clair?s lawyering as we did Cliff?s baby-delivering -- and she could take down Theo?s junior-high bluster with the same devastating debate tactics you imagine she used in the courtroom. She loved her kids like a lioness, but was never afraid to tell them when they were being idiots. And that went for their significant others, too -- Sondra?s bozo boyfriend-eventual-husband Elvin learned quickly never to make assumptions around his soon-to-be mother-in-law, as in a classic clip where Clair explained the give-and-take of marriage while at the same time blasting his anti-feminist attitudes. Do not mess with Queen Clair. -- Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Roseanne Conner, 'Roseanne'

With her loud mouth, blue-collar clothing and no-nonsense attitude, Roseanne Conner was certainly no June Cleaver. Yet like the idyllic TV moms that came before her, Roseanne was attentive, caring and would do anything necessary to take care of her family, whether that meant taking a mind-numbing job at a plastics factory or wearing a ridiculous waitress outfit to serve burgers at the mall. She gave everything she had to her family, including the occasional snide remark or snarky comment, and made sure they knew they were loved, as in the "Mall Story" episode, episode where she explained to Becky that they couldn't afford an expensive dress for her to wear to the dance ... and then got Dan to return a pair of shoes he spent the day shopping for so that ultimately they could pony up for Becky's special night. -- Ashley Majeski

Tami Taylor, 'Friday Night Lights'

Tami made all women look bad because she was so gosh-darned perfect. As the loyal, loving wife of a high school football coach, Tami was the heart and soul of her household and a generous mother who always put her two daughters first -- and backed them all the way. When she took daughter Julie to visit Boston College and Julie snapped that it was Tami's dream, not her own, Tami reminded her that her dream already came through because she had her family. Beautiful, sexy, witty and always present, Tami is the one Taylor the household never could do without. -- Maria Elena Fernandez

Kristina Braverman, 'Parenthood'

Kristina Braverman's valiant fight against cancer this season only served to show what an amazing mother she is. Despite rigorous chemotherapy treatments and a life-or-death struggle in the hospital, Kristina made sure her eldest daughter was worry-free at college, her autistic son got some undevoted attention, and her baby girl got plenty of cuddle time. Kristina is the epitome of a selfless mother who loves unconditionally. -- MEF

Alicia Florrick, 'The Good Wife'

Despite the show's name, "The Good Wife" is also about a good mom in Alicia Florrick, who has proved to be a terrific role model for her two teenaged children. After being cheated on, she dusted off her law degree, got a job and in a matter of years was made partner at her firm. But beyond that, she's a mom who actually listens to her kids and treats them -- however hesitantly -- like the adults they're slowly becoming. When her daughter Grace develops an interest in religion, she's not thrilled but keeps a watchful eye to ensure it doesn't turn into a cultlike devotion, and when her son Zach stands up to a corrupt police officer she's there to back him all the way into court. -- Randee Dawn

The Not-So-Good

Gemma Teller Morrow, 'Sons of Anarchy'

Oh sure, Gemma may have killed Jax's dad, but she had her reasons. (At least, better reasons than Queen Gertrude in "Hamlet," on which "Sons" is loosely based.) Jax wouldn't be president of SAMCRO without its matriarch's help, and her mama grizzly protectiveness extends to her grandsons. Her methods may be unorthodox (like forcing Jax's baby mama to attempt suicide), but no one can question her fierce devotion to her family. -- Dru Moorhouse

Betty Francis, 'Mad Men'

Let's be real: Betty Draper Francis will never win the Mother-of-the-Year Award. That was established early in season one, when she expressed more concern about her clothes than her daughter potentially suffocating in a dry cleaning bag. She's selfish, childlike and connects more deeply with other children (like the creepy Glen) than her own. However, as January Jones told TODAY before the start of season six, Betty and Sally shared a "very sweet" moment last season, "when Sally got her period and she went to her mother. You see that they do have a connection -- it's just a work in progress." -- DM

Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) from "The Killing."

Clap. Clap. Clap. Linden, you are unofficially the the worst mother currently on scripted TV. For this obsessed detective, the job always came first, and she routinely handed off her son to anyone who would have him. As a single mom she always ensured Jack had some kind of shelter (even if it's a shabby hotel) and food (even if it came out of a snack machine). Fortunately (for Jack's sake), her routine neglect -- including abandoning the 13-year-old alone at a motel with a 103-degree fever -- will apparently find her losing custody in the upcoming third season. -- DM

Brother arrested in fatal Calif. stabbing of girl

VALLEY SPRINGS, Calif. (AP) ? Authorities on Saturday arrested the 12-year-old brother of an 8-year-old girl who was mysteriously stabbed at her home in a quiet Northern California community last month.

Calaveras County Sheriff Gary Kuntz told reporters at a news conference that the boy will be charged with homicide.

The April 27 attack shook the tightknit Valley Springs community of about 7,400 people and set off a massive manhunt. The boy had told police that he encountered an intruder in the home and described the man as being tall with long gray hair.

Investigators did a door-to-door sweep of houses, storage sheds and horse stables scattered across oak-studded hills. Divers also searched two nearby reservoirs in search of clues.

As part of the investigation, authorities seized several knives from the home Leila shared with her father, stepmother and siblings to determine if one could have inflicted the fatal wounds.

A neighbor who told detectives she saw a man flee the Fowler home later recanted the story and was discredited by police.

Several days after the killing, hundreds of people gathered at Jenny Lind Elementary School where Leila was a popular 3rd grader.

Her mother, Krystal Walters, tearfully thanked the crowd for the support. "It will never be forgotten," she said.
